“The FA can’t ban women’s football,” protested Alice. “They just did,” Molly confirmed, outraged. “But for what reason?” demanded Florrie. “It says here that the game of football is quite unsuitable for females and ought not to be encouraged.” “Who says it’s unsuitable?” Florrie queried. “Men!” they replied in unison.

** this really happened in 1921, a year after the Dick, Kerr Ladies team (above) – formed during the war by workers at Dick, Kerr and Co Ltd, a munitions factory in Preston – drew a crowd of 53,000 to Everton’s Goodison Park. Thankfully the Football Association lifted the ban in 1971 and football is now the top participation sport for girls and women in England.
