The adjacency pair

June 16, 2013

“Hello.”  “Oh, hi.”

“What’s this big red button for?”  “Don’t touch it.”

“But I really want to push the button.”  “You’ll seriously regret it if you do.”

“Why, what will happen?”  “Terrible things. You don’t want to know.”

“Look over there.”  “What?”

“I pushed the button.”  “IT SAYS DON’T PUSH!”

  1. I got totally absorbed in reading about adjacency pairs.. especially as they used the death gorge scene from Monty Python’s ‘Holy Grail’.. and you’ve paraphrased a scene from ‘The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy’ in your story too!

I’d never heard the term Adjacency Pair until Daisy mentioned it the other day, because they’d learned about them in an English lesson. Fascinating stuff. And I somehow managed to link Monty Python with The Hitchhiker’s Guide – even better!
