On the radio Tammy Wynette is belting out her anti-feminist anthem, Stand by Your Man. Women still aspire to full equality in the home and workplace, but we’ve come a long way since 1968, right? “Sometimes it’s hard to be a woman,” she croons. Forty-five years later,  maybe nothing’s changed.

Stool pigeon

February 27, 2013

I saw things I wasn’t supposed to see, so they put me on the witness protection programme and gave me a new identity. It’s hard to leave your family and disappear like that. I was allowed to choose my new name though, which I can’t tell you. For obvious reasons.

…Reports from London confirm ninety-three additional fatalities in what is week six of the international bandwidth riots. The riots spread to all major cities after world leaders suspended public internet access amid global terrorism fears. Stock market trade ceased immediately, as did almost every other aspect of life in 2038.

** as usual on a Tuesday, this is my effort for the WordPress weekly writing challenge. This time the task was to write about a dystopian future. Details of the challenge are here: http://dailypost.wordpress.com/2013/02/25/writing-challenge-dystopia/#more-15193

Broken dreams

February 25, 2013

Last Sunday I went for a long, therapeutic walk in the early spring sunshine. Lost in my thoughts, something caught my eye beneath the bracken. Glinting furiously, the light reflecting off it was shattered into a million neon rainbow rays. Instinctively I reached down. It was a piece of glass.

My boyfriend wasn’t enjoying the party. “Come and dance,” I slurred. He looked angry. “You go home if you want, but don’t stop me, I’m having such a good time.” Then I threw up on his new trainers. “I’m leaving,” he growled, “if you want me, give me a call.”

Retail anti-therapy: part two

February 23, 2013

I am on the haberdashery floor of a well known department store. It is Saturday afternoon, I could be watching the match. Instead I am choosing fabric for our new curtains. Panic is rising inside me. There are things here I don’t understand. Help, I can’t breathe. Let me go!

The dark side

February 22, 2013

“Diary entry: 22nd February 2024. It is Friday. The onboard computer said so when it woke me up. The computer does everything here. It even feeds me. Apparently, in space, no-one can hear you scream. I wonder if the computer heard me screaming yesterday? I think I am going mad.”

Would like to meet

February 21, 2013

She was, essentially, a stranger. They’d never met in real life, yet somehow he knew she was the one. He’d been sceptical about internet dating, but there he was, alone, waiting in the bar. Is that her? “Hi. You look…different.” An uncomfortable pause. “How old did you say you were?”

Money talks

February 20, 2013

They say the love of money is the root of all evil, and that money can’t buy you love. After all, money isn’t everything, the best things in life are free. For example, health is better than wealth. Why, then, does money make the world go around? Money money money.

Three little words

February 19, 2013

I have a lot of opinions about a lot of things, but always respect the beliefs of others. Take the horsemeat scandal.

As a vegetarian I believe you meat eaters only have yourselves to blame.

However, I also accept that you enjoy consuming cheaply processed animal flesh of ambiguous origin.

** this is my response to this week’s WordPress writing challenge in which bloggers have to use visuals to illustrate a piece of text in three sections. As usual I’ve had to do this within my fifty words. Apologies if today’s piece feels a bit more political than usual – it was supposed to be tongue in cheek but I fear the visuals might look a bit threatening.
